Famagusta & the Ghost Town of Varosha

On this trip to the eastern coastline of Cyprus, you will be stunned by the glory and tragedy of Famagusta. Famagusta used to be one of the most important economic centres of the Middle East for centuries during the Middle Ages. The historic centre is, like Nicosia, still surrounded by the original Venetian city walls from the 16th century. Famagusta’s former glory is still visible in churches and fortification buildings. The Othello Tower used to be the last stronghold of Famagusta’s fortification, and the city’s recent history is as tragic as Othello’s faith. Just a five-minute drive from the walled city, we will visit the infamous suburb of Varosha, also known as “Ghost Town”. Here, we can discuss the 20th-century history of Cyprus and its influence on our daily lives.
